'Feces Smearing' Fliers Target Mayoral Candidate

POSTED: Monday, March 6, 2006
UPDATED: 7:23 am EST March 7, 2006

A mayoral candidate in Winter Park, Fla., accused of smearing dog feces on another man during an apparent outburst of anger is fighting back after anonymous fliers about the incident have circulated around the city.

According to a police report, mayoral candidate David Strong smeared what appeared to be dog excrement on Rudi Vuckovic's shirt and neck during an incident six years ago.

"He was nuts," resident Vuckovic told Local 6 News Monday. "It was inhuman and it was so bad. I didn't believe any one person could do something like that."

Rudi Vuckovic said the dog feces were smeared on him as he walked his dog.

"Basically, the incident happened and I regret it," Strong said Monday. "I wish it would not have happened but I was protecting my wife and family and it seemed like the right thing to do at the time."

Strong told Local 6 News that he made a poor decision at the time.

"The particular resident made some curses to my wife that threatened her and I reacted poorly to that," Strong said.

"Although he may have wiped dog droppings on someone, Strong said he is the victim of a smear campaign," Local 6 reporter Mike DeForest said.

In recent days, Winter Park residents have received a flier in the mail explaining the candidate's offenses.

Strong does not believe incumbent Mayor Kip Marchman is behind the fliers but thinks whoever is mailing the fliers is breaking election laws.

"Anonymous mailers affecting an election are illegal and I have actually retained an attorney to look into that for me and file the appropriate complaint," Strong said.

As part of his sentence, Strong served 40 hours of community service and also attended some anger management classes, Local 6 News reported.

Marchman was unavailable for comment for the story.
