8-year-old shot with arrow on school field trip

Girl says Taylor Swift songs helped calm her

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – An 8-year-old girl is recovering after she was shot in the leg with an arrow during a school field trip to a California museum.

The incident happened Tuesday as Nadine Hairston was playing on a replica of a whale outside the Lawrence Hall of Science in San Rafael.

"I was climbing down and I feel this shock," Nadine told reporters. "I look down and see an arrow."

Nadine was rushed to the hospital, and an X-ray revealed the arrow had cut through her thigh.

Nadine's mom never dreamed a school field trip would land her daughter in the emergency room.

"I was in disbelief," Alicia Hairston said.

Doctors said they were amazed at how calm Nadine remained during the ordeal.

"Nadine had a smile on her face, so we smiled with her," Hairston said.

One thing that helped Nadine stay calm was singing her favorite songs.

"I know Taylor Swift songs by heart," Nadine said.

Nadine returned home after surgery and continues to recover.

Police are investigating to see who shot the arrow.

Nadine said she's now very popular in her town.

"I give autographs out," Nadine said. "I've already gave out two today."
