Police: Woman Faked Rape To Avoid Being Fired

POSTED: Wednesday, March 15, 2006
UPDATED: 11:36 am EST March 15,2006

A 40-year-old woman in Marion County, Fla., who claimed she was raped as she walked to work made up the story so she would not be fired from her job, according to a police report.

Lanette Welcher told police over the weekend that she was walking to work in Belleview when a man in a blue Honda stopped and offered her a ride.

Welcher said she entered the car and he took her to an unknown area in Summerfield and raped her at knifepoint.

However, during follow-up interviews, Welcher admitted to making up the story so she would not be fired, a sheriff's news release said.

Welcher said she missed work on Saturday.

The woman was charged with filing a false report and habitual driving while license suspended or revoked.
