Gas prices in Florida could hit $2,80 a gallon this summer.
Gasoline prices are almost 40 cents a gallon higher than they were a year ago, as oil companies face increased scrutiny over their record-breaking profits, and consumers pay more at the pumps, according to Local 6 News partner
Florida Today.
"Already in Florida, gas prices are up just 13 cents in just a month,"
Florida Today online news editor Dave Larimer said on Local 6 First News Monday. "The average in Florida is $2.48 a gallon. Believe it or not we are the 11th highest in the nation for gas prices."
Nationwide, the average price for regular unleaded was $2.431 a gallon, up almost 38 cents from a year ago and almost 16 cents from a month ago.
"The lowest gas price in the nation is New Jersey at $2.22 a gallon," Larimer said.
Some analysts expect that, by summer, the average price for regular unleaded could rise to $2.75 a gallon nationwide, and to $2.80 a gallon in Florida -- and that's barring any crisis that might push up prices more.
"Big business runs the show. The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer," Central Floria motorist Randy Tryzbiak said.
