An 82-year-old man narrowly escaped a fast-moving house fire this morning in Apopka, according to the man's family and fire officials.
The man, identified by family as JR Harper, was trying to keep the fire from spreading at his home on Thompson Road when neighbors yelled for him to come out from the house. His daughter, Janice Talley, tells Local 6 her dad got into his truck and drove out from the flames.
The fire burned Harper badly on the hand, but he is in stable condition at a local hospital. The house appeared destroyed.
Firefighters had Thompson Road at South Oak Lane blocked for several hours. At one point they worried the fire would spread to nearby woods, but firefighters were able to put it out quickly.
Investigators from the State Fire Marshal's office are working to determine what started the fire.
