Medical Examiner: Gator Killed Girl
Doctor Calls Cause Of Death 'Drowned Due To Alligator Attack'
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- A medical examiner confirmed Monday that a 2-year-old girl found dead on a lake shore was killed by an alligator.
"The cause of death is drowned due to alligator attack," said Dr. Stephen Nelson. "She was alive at the time of the attack."
Alexandria Murphy was reported missing Saturday afternoon after she wandered away from her family's back yard, police said. Her mother and grandmother were inside the house when she disappeared.
A Polk County sheriff's deputy found the girl's body less than an hour later near the Lake Cannon shoreline. Alexandria had bites on both arms and her right thigh, as well as a broken left arm.
Her body was found next to an alligator, but authorities were unsure at first whether the girl drowned and was later bitten by the alligator or vice versa.
The 6.5-foot long alligator was trapped and killed. Alexandria is the 12th person killed in a Florida alligator attack in the last 50 years, including a 71-year-old Sarasota man killed last month.
