Gator Attacks Woman At Nudist Resort
Wildlife Officers Have Been Trying To Trap 7-Foot Reptile
LAND O' LAKES, Fla. -- A woman suffered serious leg and arm
injuries in an alligator attack Wednesday while swimming in a lake
at a nudist resort.
She was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital and was undergoing
surgery Wednesday afternoon, hospital spokeswoman Ellen Fiss said.
The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was listed in serious but
stable condition. The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Pasco County Sheriff's spokesman Jon Powers said.
The attack occurred shortly before 3 p.m. while the woman was
swimming with her husband in the 35-acre lake at Lake Como Resort,
said Sabrina Vizzari, manager of the nudist camp about 25 miles
north of Tampa, Fla.
The woman's husband heard her yell, looked over and saw the
gator grabbing her. He kicked at the alligator and pulled his wife
from the water, Powers said.
Witnesses told deputies that the alligator was about 7 feet long.
"The resort has been here 60 years and we've never had anything
like this happen before," Vizzari said.
She said that wildlife officers recently had been trying without
success to trap a gator.
Powers said that the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission, which
has jurisdiction to catch and remove aggressive gators, has been
notified of the attack.
Land O' Lakes is 20 miles north of Tampa.
