Dolphin DB Arrested For DUI
Cornerback Hits Parked Police Car
MIAMI -- Miami Dolphins cornerback Ben Kelly was charged
with driving under the influence of alcohol after striking a parked
Miami-Dade police car along a state highway.
Kelly was arrested Wednesday after his 2001 Toyota sport utility
vehicle hit a parked police car at 6:30 a.m. on the southbound side
of the Palmetto Expressway, Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Nelda
Fonticiella said.
Kelly, reached at his home in Davie, declined comment.
Police said that he refused a roadside breathalyzer test and was
arrested and detained at Turner Guilford Knight correctional center
in Miami for more than eight hours. He was released after posting a
$2,500 bond, jail spokeswoman Janelle Hall said.
The accident caused $200 in damage to the police car and $500 in
damage to Kelly's SUV, Fonticiella said. No one was injured.
Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said coach Dave Wannstedt was
on vacation and would meet with Kelly next week.
"We were just made aware of it (Thursday) morning," Greene said.
Neal Cornrich, Kelly's agent, did not immediately return a phone
message.
Kelly, a punt returner, missed most of last season after he tore
a ligament in his left knee in a September game against the New
England Patriots. He finished the season with five punt returns for
a 6.2 yard average.
He underwent knee surgery in October and took part in spring and
summer workouts with the team.
The former Associated Press third-team All-American at Colorado
was a third-round draft pick by the Dolphins in 2000.
