A man in Brevard County, Fla., was taken into custody Monday night after he allegedly jumped into an ambulance and led police on a three-county chase with sirens blaring, according to Local 6 News.
Police said an employee at the New Smyrna Speedway noticed an ambulance was missing Monday night and then saw it drive by.
The employee followed the vehicle and called 911.
"Police pursued the vehicle, which had its lights flashing and sirens blaring," Local 6 reporter Jessica D'Onofrio said.
"He was a pretty smart guy," Speedway employee Don Nerone said. "If you want to go fast in traffic, then turn your lights on. He had all the lights twirling and it looked like a real ambulance going down the highway."
Police said they communicated with the man, identified by police as Jared Crowl, through the ambulance's radio. They told Crowl they were planning on throwing stop-sticks at the vehicle.
Officers said he told them he would commit suicide if they did, according to the report.
The chase went through Volusia and Seminole counties and ended in Brevard County when police decided to use stop-sticks on the ambulance.
Crowl got out and attempted to flee on foot, police said. However, when he reached an embankment filled with alligators, he surrendered to officers, according to the report.
"With an incident with that much distance and nobody got hurt, we are happy about it and we consider ourselves fortunate," Seminole County sheriff's Lt. Barry Smith said.
Crowl is being charged with grand theft auto and eluding police.
