Escapee arrested after carjacking elderly man at gunpoint, police say

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Authorities released the 911 calls reporting the escape of a prisoner from Winter Park Hospital after got into a fight with a corrections officer, stole his gun and carjacked an 83-year-old man.

James Cornell West III, 24, of Orlando, was captured a short time later and re-arrested near Maitland Avenue and U.S. 17-92.

According to Winter Park police, West was initially arrested Wednesday on burglary charges and was taken to Winter Park Hospital on Thursday.  There, he attacked the corrections officer, stole his gun and fled the hospital, police said.

West then ran across Lakemont Avenue, pointed the gun at the elderly man near Lakemont and Hollywood avenues and stole his car, police said.

After several witnesses called 911, officers were able to stop the vehicle and arrest West, who faces charges of armed carjacking, robbery, aggravated assault, battery on a law enforcement officer, grand theft, attempting to elude and escape.

The corrections officer suffered minor injuries in the attack, police said.
