A 43-year-old man will go before a judge Wednesday on charges he snapped a broomstick in half during an argument and repeatedly used the jagged end to stab his Cape Canaveral girlfriend, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.

The woman's injuries, including punctures to her back and one of legs, were reported to Brevard County sheriff's deputies on Tuesday by a group of homeless people who saw her later in the morning and tended to her wounds.

Her injuries were not considered to be life threatening, said Cpl. Terry Bartnick of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

The woman's boyfriend, Sylvain Duguay, of the 200 block of Caroline Street in Cape Canaveral, was charged with aggravated battery, resisting arrest and battery on a law enforcement officer for spitting in Deputy Bartnick's face, records show.

The incident happened about 6 a.m. Tuesday at Duguay's apartment.

"He picked up a broomstick, snapped it in half and stabbed her. We don't know what they were arguing about," Bartnick said.

"He appeared pretty intoxicated. She didn't want to call us but some people she knew called us. She was conscious but very fearful."

The woman's pinky finger was also broken during the struggle, Florida Today reported. The woman, who was not identified, was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne for treatement of her injuries, Bartnick said. Her condition was not immediately known.

Deputies sprayed mace to control Duguay, who later had to be dragged from the apartment.

Duguay was taken to the Brevard County Jail where he is being held without bond.
