Counselors: Witnessing Slashing Like War Trauma

POSTED: Monday, June 19, 2006
UPDATED: 7:20 pm EDT June 19,2006

Counselors met with neighbors in Lake Mary, Fla., after several of them witnessed a man slash his 11-year-old to death with a samurai sword, according to a Local 6 News report.

Witnesses said they saw the boy, Nico Duzant, stagger out of the home located on 484 Queensbridge Drive bleeding from the neck and wrists and his father, Franklyn Duzant, 40, allegedly chasing him with the sword.

The father kept attacking the boy with the sword while he was on the ground and then ran into the house, according to the report.

When officers arrived, they found the boy dead and Duzant's wife, Evangeline, 52, decapitated inside the couple's house.

  • Authorities said a disabled Army veteran fatally slashed his fifth-grade son in front of neighbors and killed his wife.

Counselors equate what neighbors witnessed to the trauma suffered by soldiers during war, according to the report.

They said neighbors need to find a way to ease the pain of witnessing the incident.

"They need to talk," crisis counselor Charlotte Giulliani said. "They need to process their feelings and talk. If they can't talk to us as a group or don't feel comfortable talking in a controlled setting, then they need to certainly rely on friends, family and pastors at their church."

Duzant is a disabled Army veteran.

Monday, Seminole County detectives were trying to get access to his military and mental health records.
