Dad: 'Everything Got Messed Up' Day Family Was Butchered

Duzant Calls Incident 'A Blur, Bad Dream'

A man in Lake Mary, Fla., accused of slashing his son to death on his birthday in front of neighbors after decapitating his wife with a samurai sword said the incident is "a blur and a bad dream," according to information released by the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Franklyn Duzant, 40, could not recall the actual crimes during his first interview but the second time, he allegedly accepted responsibility in the deaths of his son and wife, Local 6 News reported.

"He stated, 'Everything spiraled out of control. This was a special day and everything got messed up,'" Seminole County Sheriff Don Eslinger said.

Witnesses said they saw the boy, Nico Duzant, stagger out of the home located on 484 Queensbridge Drive bleeding from the neck and wrists and his father chasing him with the sword.

The father kept attacking the boy with the sword while he was on the ground and then ran into the house, according to the report.

The day of the crimes was Nico's birthday and deputies said the boy's cake was still in the refrigerator when they checked the house.

"When asked why, he could not offer an explanation, he said, 'This is all a blur, a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad blur dream,'" Eslinger said.

Duzant appeared in court Wednesday with staples in his neck from a 5-inch laceration. He also had a stab wound to his abdomen, a cut on his eye and a contusion to the back of his head.

He appeared in court unemotional and detached when he faced a judge on two counts of first-degree murder, Local 6 News reported.

Investigators are still trying to determine how many of the injuries were self inflicted but officers told Local 6 News that he admitted to trying to cut his own throat telling them, "I did not go deep enough," Local 6 reporter Jessica D'Onofrio said.

Duzant is being held on no bond.
