Orlando Police Chief Fires Back After Call For Resignation

POSTED: Saturday, June 24, 2006
UPDATED: 12:54 am EDT June 24, 2006

The Orlando police chief fired back Friday after a call for his resignation in connection with a racial profiling controversy sparked by a city commissioner and her son.

Commissioner Daisy Lynum said her son, Juan Lynum, 30, was unfairly targeted in a traffic stop by an officer in May.

During the traffic stop, Lynum called his mother and allegedly said he must have been stopped by a white police officer because of racial profiling, Local 6 News reported.

"Daisy Lynum later made the comment that she did not want 'some white boy shooting my son or Tasing him,'" Local 6 reporter Chris Trenkmann said.

McCoy then wrote Lynum and said she had offended some of his officers when she said she was afraid her son would be shot or "Tased" by "a white boy cop."

Friday, he said despite Lynum's demand that he resign over the incident, he is moving on.

"I'm not asking for any apologies," McCoy said. "It had an impact on the department. I didn't know if she understood how big of an impact."

"There are so many things that we have and so many challenges that we have that we are ready to move on and ready to move forward," Orlando Chief Administrator Byron Brooks said.

Juan Lynum is running for Orange County commissioner. But the current occupant of the Orange County seat, Homer Hartage, is calling for Daisy Lynum to apologize for the "white boy" comment, Local 6 News reported.

The Orlando police attorney helped write the department's anti-profiling procedures and said if you are stopped, you can file a racial complaint when it is over, Trenkmann said.

"Follow the commands of the officer," police attorney Natasha Permaul said. "If there is a problem, complain about it after the fact."

Two of Central Florida's top black leaders have given votes of confidence to the Orlando Police Department.

Also, Mayor Buddy Dyer said he has no plans of firing McCoy, Trenkmann said.

Meanwhile, Daisy Lynum said she would address racial profiling issues next week.
