A 13-year-old boy swimming in the waters off Playalinda Beach suffered a significant injury to his calf in Brevard County's most recent shark attack, according to Local 6 News.
Brevard County Fire-Rescue spokesman Orlando Dominguez said the boy's mother heard him scream and saw him pulled under the water.
The injury was "significant enough to fly the victim to Arnold Palmer (Hospital for Women and Children), but the victim was stable," Dominguez told Local 6 News partner Florida Today. "It was a significant bite to the lower extremity."
"My brother and I went out to help him and found out he had been bitten by a shark and he was bleeding pretty bad from his leg," a witness told Local 6 News.
Lifeguards in Brevard County remain on the lookout for sharks after the attack.
"We are seeing them," Brevard County lifeguard Wyatt Werneth said. "We have red-flagged our beaches and warned swimmers about them. They are out there."
Lifeguards also said that swimmers must be smart this time of year.
"When you see pelicans diving into the water where there are bait fish, beware of that," said Werneth.
Werneth said it is important for swimmers to stay near lifeguard stands when in the water.
