A Central Florida couple whose multi-million-dollar home was destroyed by a lightning-sparked fire may have been between insurance polices, according to a Local 6 News report.

Fire officials assess homeowners Thomas and Kimberly Down's losses at $4 million.

Since the couple may have been between insurance polices, some of the financial costs of rebuilding and cleanup could fall back on the couple, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

"They were really upset this morning but were doing the best that they can," said James Habovick, the city fire marshal for the beachside town. "They are there at the home and are planning to move into the mother-in-law apartment which is actually quite large. They can live in there, they just have to get the power turned on."

The Downs were vacationing out of state Tuesday morning when a bolt of lightning ripped into the roof of their Lansing Island home.

Most of the homes in the neighborhood -- which has a private bridge as its only entrance point off South Patrick Drive -- range upward to $2 million or more, Florida Today reported.

The home's value was listed at $2 million, according to the Brevard County property appraiser's Web site. However, the $4 million in damages includes not just the structural loss but other belongings the couple had in the home, Habovick said.

The couple was also attempting to retrieve an antique car from their water-damaged garage, Habovick said.

The couple did not immediately return calls left on an answering machine at Downs Corporations, their real estate development company.
