An 81-year-old man who was attacked by two pit bulls in front of his Kissimmee home has died, Local 6 News has confirmed.
Police said John Brannaman died Monday from a heart attack as he recovered from being attacked by a pair of loose pit bulls.
Brannaman was taking out the trash last week when he was attacked.
"Neighbors said the dogs came out from nowhere and attacked the elderly man without warning," Local 6 reporter Deborah Garcia said.
Officials said a neighbor shot and killed one of the dogs while another neighbor used a shovel to pry the other dog from the man.
"I shot at the ground to try to scare it off of him and it didn't even turn," neighbor Bobby McIntyre said. "So, I had to shoot it in the back hip. It was the only thing that would get it off him. Even after I shot the dog, it got off him and turned right back at him and then turned and came at me."
"I was scared," neighbor Ramon Santiago said after the attack. "I had to jump the fence because I was afraid he was going to attack me."
Both dogs are being tested for rabies.
Also, Animal Control took a litter of eight pit bull puppies from the dogs' owner.
Charges have not been filed.
