A crime wave in Orlando, Fla., has sparked talk of setting an earlier curfew for juveniles across the city, according to a Local 6 News report.
"Orlando police are looking at several different options to curb the city's rising murder rate and one of those initiatives could mean changes for your kids and how late they can be out on the streets," Local 6 News reporter Jessica D'Onofrio said.
"We've looked at it," Orlando police Lt. Robert Pigman said. "We've examined it and we will not rule it out at this time. But it's something we're keeping on the table."
Washington D.C., is moving its curfew to 10 p.m. after an upswing in violent crime recently. With a rising murder rate, something similar is being considered in Orlando, Local 6 News has learned.
Officers said the majority of Orlando's murders have something to do with drugs and to a certain extent that involves juveniles.
"On a national basis, lots of cities are experiencing a similar rise in the murder rate," Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said. "Over the next three years we are going to put an additional 75 officers on the street and we are going to create new substations in neighborhoods so that we have police out in their cars in their neighborhoods."
Orlando's current curfew, which covers 12 blocks of downtown, is more than 10 years old and targets children under 18 who are out after midnight, the report said.
Authorities said they will discuss approaching the City Council about the curfew, D'Onofrio said.
