A manhunt for a driver who allegedly hit and critically injured an Orange County sheriff's deputy on Interstate 4 has moved to the tourist-filled Universal Studios theme park, according to a Local 6 News report.
"One of the leads (police) are following is that the driver hopped the fence and went into Universal Studios," Local 6 reporter Deborah Garcia said.
Investigators said sheriff's Deputy Michael Callin tried to perform a traffic stop on Interstate 4 near Universal Boulevard and Kirkman Road in the Universal Orlando area, but the vehicle did not stop.
"The car struck him and kept going for a few hundred feet," Local 6 News reporter Deborah Garcia said. "As the deputy lay injured, the driver and several passengers took off on foot. In total, there was one driver and three passengers in the Honda that hit Deputy Michael Callin."
One passenger remained in the vehicle and two other passengers were taken into custody by K-9 units. The driver fled the area on foot.
The driver is described as a Hispanic man about 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white tank-top shirt.
Authorities closed the I-4 ramp to Kirkman Road and Universal Boulevard and Major Boulevard.
Interstate 4 was closed but was reopened Tuesday night. Traffic is expected to remain slow in the area.
"It is a serious traffic situation to say the least," Frier said.
Callin, 26, was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
Anyone with information concerning the incident is urged to call the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
