Attackers Pummel Man's Face While Yelling Racial Slurs

POSTED: Thursday, August 24, 2006

Investigators in Kissimmee, Fla., are searching for two men who took turns pummeling a 22-year-old man while yelling racial slurs and then leaving him on the side of a road, according to a Local 6 News report.

The victim's mother, Estella Vega, said her son was hanging out at Old Town on U.S. 192 in Kissimmee and missed his Lynx bus ride home.

David Romon said that as he began to walk home, two men attacked him on a sidewalk.

"They took turns; one of them would look, like a lookout, while the other was beating him," Vega said. "They told him, 'I want to kill you, I want to kill you; I hate Puerto Ricans because you don't have any money on you. I hate you."

Romon gave the men all of the money he had in his possession -- $1.50, the report said.

"Why in the world would they go ahead and start hitting my son like that," Vega said. "Somebody grabbed him and broke a beer bottle in his head, and they cut him with a beer bottle."

Doctors will need to reconstruct the man's nose and face, the report said.

"Why would they do that for no reason whatsoever?" Vega said. "(Is it) because he is not white? That is no reason at all."

Romon described his attackers as two men wearing black shirts and jeans.

Anyone with information on this attack is urged to call Crimeline at 800-243-TIPS.
