Search Continues For Missing Boy

Missing Boy's Grandfather Is On Death Row

POSTED: Thursday, August 31, 2006
UPDATED: 7:02 am EDT September 1, 2006

As authorities in Leesburg, Fla., continued to question sex offenders and neighbors in an effort to find a missing toddler, Local 6 News has learned that the child's family has been in the legal spotlight before.

Trenton Duckett, 2, was last seen in his room at 7 p.m. Sunday. His parents first noticed he was missing around 9 p.m. Leesburg police said a screen on a window in the boy's room was cut. They believe the boy is in danger and are looking at all possibilities.

"As loved one's continued to pass out missing persons fliers for Duckett, one family member is not able to join the search effort, Trenton's grandfather, James Duckett, who is awaiting lethal injection on Florida's death row," Local 6's Mike DeForest said.

Nearly 20 years ago, the Mascotte police officer was convicted of raping and murdering an 11-year-old girl.

Prosecutors said they found the girl's fingerprints on the hood of Duckett's patrol car and that his tire tracks were near the lake where the girl was drowned.

Duckett has maintained his innocence.

"I did not do this," Duckett said. "And, like I told the jury a while ago, sooner or later, I'll be able to prove it."

"Over the years, several journalists, crime scene investigators and even some law enforcement officers have questioned whether Duckett was wrongly sentenced to death row," DeForest said.

However, 10 months ago, the Florida Supreme Court denied Duckett's request for DNA testing.

As Duckett awaits his execution, his former wife and their son, who is the missing toddler's father, await word about the missing child.

"The fact that the child has not yet been recovered has some optimism to it and certainly some pessimism," Team Adam spokesman Andrew Bita said.

Trenton Duckett was last seen wearing a striped shirt and denim shorts.

Leesburg police, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the FBI are working on the case. Volunteers also are circulating fliers with Trenton's picture.

"We have no real updates," Leesburg Capt. Steve Rockefeller said Thursday. "It's still under investigation."
