Police: Mom's Suicide Is Major Setback In Search For Missing Boy

POSTED: Friday, September 8, 2006
UPDATED: 9:35 am EDT September 9, 2006

The body of a woman whose 2-year-old son has been missing for nearly two weeks was found Friday in her grandparents' home in The Villages, according to police.

"Initial observations indicate the death was from a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Leesburg Police Capt. Steve Rockefeller said.

"Police say this is a major setback in the case," Local 6's Jessica D'Onofrio said. "They were trying to establish a timeline for where Melinda Duckett was the night her son disappeared. And they are saying her suicide will hinder that part of the investigation."

Leesburg authorities said Melinda Duckett's body was found in a home at 638 Rainbow Lane in the Villages of Lady Lake. Police said the house belonged to the woman's grandparents.

"Obviously, one of the things we are going to be very interested in is some type of a note," Leesburg police Capt. Steve Rockefeller said.

Duckett spoke with Local 6 on Wednesday. She said she was mentally drained and broke out in tears during the interview.

"I don't care," Duckett said. "I just want my life to go back to normal."

According to authorities, Trenton Duckett, 2, was last seen in his room. His mother first noticed he was missing around 9 p.m. Leesburg police said a screen on a window in the boy's room was cut and that he was apparently taken through the opening.

Melinda Duckett had earlier told Local 6 News that the day before Trenton vanished, she and the child were driving around visiting friends and family.

Detectives are still searching for witnesses who can either back up her account or contradict it.

Local 6 News learned that police gave a lie-detector test to a friend who was inside Melinda Duckett's home the night she reported her son missing from his bedroom.

"Detectives are satisfied the friend never saw the 2-year-old that night," Local 6's Mike DeForest said.
