Police in Orlando, Fla., are investigating a possible hate crime after burglars broke into a home and wrote hate messages, including "I hate Puerto Ricans" on the home before fleeing with the family's car and $8,000 worth of items.
Investigators said the culprits left offensive graffiti on the doors and walls of the Aguirre family's Orlando home. They ransacked the home and also poured bleach into the family's fish tank, killing all of the fish inside.
"I was upset because it was something that I can't believe," family member Lisa Martinez said. "They drew on the doors. They said, 'I took your car, I'm a white boy and I hate Puerto Ricans.'"
The culprits also stole a $30,000 2003 Toyota Matrix show car owned by the Aguirre family.
"They broke my heart," Juan Aguirre said. "Because I clean my car every day, you know every day, every day so I'm ready for any show."
"The family members said they have no enemies and don't understand why someone would first steal from them and then add insult to injury by writing offensive racial graffiti inside their home," Local 6's Deborah Garcia said.
The family said they now fear for their safety after the robbery.
Anyone with information concerning the crime or the location of Aguirre's car is urged to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
