Stuffed Animal Found In Ocala National Forest Search For Boy

POSTED: Thursday, September 14, 2006

Search teams in the Ocala National Forest in Marion County, Fla., are trying to determine if a stuffed animal found in some woods Thursday belonged to a missing 2-year-old boy, Local 6 News has learned.

Authorities received a new tip Thursday into the possible whereabouts of Trenton Duckett. Trenton and his mother were apparently seen in the Ocala National Forest on the weekend he vanished, police said Thursday.

The FBI and Leesburg police would not confirm if the stuffed animal they found Thursday was the one seen in a photograph offered by a family friend.

According to detectives, Trenton was last seen in his room more than two weeks ago. His mother, Melinda Duckett, said she first noticed he was missing around 9 p.m. Leesburg police said a screen on a window in the boy's room was cut and that he was apparently taken through the opening.

Duckett committed suicide last week, officials said, and since then investigators have leaned away from the theory that an intruder snatched the boy from his home.

Leesburg police Capt. Steve Rockefeller said Thursday's tip was one of several that they have followed in recent days.

"I know we have searched a minimum of 10 different areas," Rockefeller said.

Rockefeller also said a pet cemetery was searched for Trenton.

During Thursday's news conference, it was also mentioned that Melinda Duckett purchased a shotgun in August. It was recovered and transported to a crime lab.

Also Thursday, Melinda's estranged husband, Joshua Duckett, confirmed that authorities took her to a mental behavioral center because she threatened to kill herself months before Trenton was born.

Meanwhile, Trenton's family is holding a prayer vigil at 7:30 p.m. in Leesburg Square.

Anyone with information into Trenton's whereabouts is urged to call 800-CALL-FBI.
