80-Year-Olds Suffer Heat Stroke, Exhaustion

A mall security guard who noticed a "call 911, help" note in a car window likely saved the lives of two elderly women who became trapped when their vehicle's battery died and the automatic locks failed, according to a Local 6 News report.

Officials said two women in their 80s were recovering Saturday from heat stroke and heat exhaustion after spending several hours trapped inside a Cadillac at the Volusia Mall.

As the heat began to rise, the women ripped a portion from a tissue box and wrote the help message and posted it in the vehicle's window.

The security guard spotted the message and then spotted the trapped women. Rescue workers broke a window and pulled the women to safety.

"They wanted out," Volusia County Fire Rescue Yusuf Abdullah. "The one lady in the back was really critical."

Both women were transported to Halifax Hospital and are expected to survive.
