Grave Sites Searched In Missing-Boy Case

Second Suicide Note Confirmed Monday

POSTED: Monday, September 25, 2006
UPDATED: 8:02 pm EDT September 25, 2006

Marion County investigators dispatched several search crews Monday night to examine possible grave sites in the search for a missing 2-year-old boy, Local 6 News has learned.

Authorities said one of the locations to be searched for Trenton Duckett is in the Ocala National Forest and the others are scattered throughout the county.

"The search is based on strictly an unconfirmed tip," Local 6's Mike DeForest said.

Second Suicide Note Found

Also Monday, investigators confirmed that Trenton's mother, Melinda Duckett, wrote a second suicide note possibly written to police.

DeForest said the second note was found inside Duckett's car after she committed suicide.

They said the note shed little light on the investigation.

"As far as to pointing us to where Trenton is or Melinda's involvement in this case, there isn't anything to indicate that," Leesburg police Capt. Steve Rockefeller said.

Part of the first suicide letter released over the weekend spoke to the questions she faced in media interviews just before the suicide, including a confrontational spot on CNN Headline News' Nancy Grace in which the host and guests openly questioned her innocence.

"Your focus came off of my son. I love him and only wanted him safe in my arms," Duckett wrote in the letter, which mentioned no one in the media by name.

"You created rumors and twisted words," Duckett wrote. "…I only wish you do not push anyone else. I do not bleed my emotions to the public."

Candy May Be Lead

Meanwhile, police continued to search for a store clerk who sold Duckett some Jelly Belly candy and chocolate.

Detectives collected the candy wrappers from Duckett's car a short time after she reported his abduction.

Rockefeller also said the vehicle was checked for hidden blood evidence.

"If there was anything like that found, it was trace amounts," Rockefeller said. "There was nothing to indicate that a crime of violence took place in the car."

Crime lab technicians continued to analyze a rifle Duckett purchased before her son vanished.

Video Checked

Investigators asked businesses in Marion County to check surveillance video to see if Trenton or his mother entered the store.

As of Monday night, 21 business offered videotape to investigators to be checked.

"We have had detectives this weekend sitting down for four hours each watching these surveillance tapes," Marion County sheriff's Capt. James Pogue said. "That is the only way you are going to get something, especially three weeks after the incident occurred."

Reward Increased

Trenton's family added $5,000 to the reward money Monday.

"So, now a total of $10,000 will go to anyone who can assist in the safe return of Trenton Duckett," DeForest said.

Trenton was reported missing Aug. 27.
