ORLANDO, Fla. -

President Barack Obama signed a bill into law on Tuesday granting NASA's Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo crew members full ownership rights to artifacts they obtained more than 40 years ago.

Space.com reports the legislation (H.R. 4158) clarifies what NASA Administrator Charles Bolden described as "fundamental misunderstandings and unclear policies."

The bill was authored in response to NASA's recent challenges to attempted sales of space mission memorabilia by several astronauts. Once such item was a checklist from Apollo 13 commander James Lovelin January. The item was valued at almost $400,000 at auction.

The bill clarifies what NASA Administrator Charles Bolden described as "fundamental misunderstandings and unclear policies."
