Gov. Rick Scott has been assessing the damage left by Tropical Storm Beryl in northeast Florida.

Beryl came ashore early Monday near Jacksonville Beach with near-hurricane-strength winds of 70 mph.

Scott met Monday afternoon with Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown and other elected officials. Scott said the city was quickly clearing downed trees and power lines and restoring power to roughly 20,000 people in the city.

Scott said it was fortunate that Beryl had not strengthened into a hurricane.

Brown said the city would assess the damage before deciding how much state and federal aid to seek.

Beryl canceled Memorial Day events across northeast Florida and caused inconvenience on the roadways, but no injuries were reported. Florida Highway Patrol Capt. Keith Gaston said no storm-related crashes had been reported.
