Brevard County Commission allows lawsuit on school closures
County staff to file lawsuit against school district on school closures
The Brevard County Commission allows county staff on Tuesday file a lawsuit against the Brevard School District to halt the planned closing of three schools.
Local 6 news partner Florida Today reports the vote was 5-0. Four votes were needed to pursue legal action.
County Commission Chairman Andy Anderson and Commissioner Trudie Infantini at a previous meeting opposed filing the lawsuit.
But they changed their vote today after hearing more details from County Attorney Scott Knox about alleged violations by the school board to an interlocal agreement between the county and the school district related to decisions to close schools.
The school board recently voted to close Clearlake Middle in Cocoa, Gardendale Elementary on Merritt Island and South Lake Elementary in Titusville as part of a plan to cut costs
Knox said the county will ask a judge for an injunction halting to school closing process.
