Don't use it? Don't need it? Rent it.

ORLANDO, Fla. -

That power saw in the garage is collecting dust.

So is that sewing machine.

And let's not get started on that kayak.

Instead, let's rent out all that stuff.  Let's turn it into cash.

Some Central Floridians are getting in on a growing online trend that turns ordinary citizens into mini-leasing companies.  They're renting out everything from their golf clubs to the extra space in their driveways.  Just ask Kristin Campbell.  She rents out her car all the time.

"I've has several really positive rental experiences," Campbell says.

She simply lists the car on SnapGoods.com, one of a growing number of websites that allow owners to post their possessions for rent.  At SnapGoods, consumers can find a huge variety of items including cars, cameras, and even disco balls.

Ron J. Williams of SnapGoods.com says his service makes sense for those looking for deals, as well.

"If I don't have to buy a $15,000 HD red cam, and instead can get it for $500 for the week or the day, I win and you win," Williams explains.

And that's the key.  Consumers are figuring out that spending a lot of money for something they may need only once in a while is no longer practical.  And renters are figuring out that they may be sitting on untapped resources.  In fact, at parkatmyhouse.com people are making money off extra spaces in their driveways or extra lots on their properties.

"It's really popular if you live near a ballpark or stadium," says Kyle Taylor of thepennyhoarder.com.

Local 6 scanned several rental web sites and found many private parking spaces around Orlando for rent, including one in the heart of downtown at the Solaire at the Plaza Condominiums for $100 per month.  Also available:

  • Parking for boats and RVs near UCF for $89 per month
  • A vacation rental near Disney
  • Nike golf clubs in Orlando
  • A post hole digger in Groveland

"Some of these products have never been rentable before, so it's a whole new world," says Williams.

Experts who track online rentals say renters can earn anywhere from $200 a week for a car to $20 a day for a Kitchen Aid blender.  Kristin Campbell is intrigued.  She's had so much success in renting out her car, she's considering renting someone else's stuff.

"I would consider things like a bike for the day and then biking to the beach," she says.

Like any other kind of Internet commerce, users should exercise caution.  It's important that the rental site offer protections in case something goes wrong.  Users should also check their own insurance policies and zoning laws to be sure that renting out a car, for example,  or a parking space, for that matter, is legal.
