Church Street Station train prepared for move
The two-week process of relocating the historic Church Street Station train continued on Wednesday.
Crews from the moving company RE Johnson moved the passenger car on a flatbed truck to the Gulf Coast Railway Museum in Parrish Wednesday morning.
The train is being moved one car at a time, with the passenger car going first and the 100-year-old engine car last. The $160,000 project will tow more than 40 tons out of downtown Orlando.
Spectators watched the train leave on its route, starting out going east on South Street, then taking a right onto Orange Avenue, a right onto Anderson Street, a right on to Division Street, a left onto South Street and then a right onto Orange Blossom Trail.
The truck then stopped on Orange Blossom Trail between South Street and Colonial Drive until about 9 a.m., when traffic lightened up. It then headed west onto Colonial Drive.
The train has been displayed on Church Street for more than three decades. City officials decided to move the train to make room for the SunRail project, which was approved last year.
Although some residents say they are sad to see the iconic train go, the SunRail coming to Central Florida leaves much to look forward to.
“I think it's good,” said resident Vicki Cochran. “I want the SunRail to come through so I'm looking forward to that.”
The train will be housed less than two hours away at the Florida Railway Museum just south of Tampa, which features dozens of historic locomotives and also offers train rides.
