City OKs Magic to put downpayment on OPD headquarters
Team wants to create entertainment complex
Orlando city leaders gave the Orlando Magic the option to buy the land that serves as Orlando Police headquarters in order to create a $100 million entertainment complex.
During Monday's council meeting, city leaders gave the team approval to put a downpayment on the OPD headquarters property as they begin the process of assessing the value.
Commissioners expressed the need for OPD to have a better, more technologically advanced building.
The Magic first spoke about building a $100 million complex in 2011. Recently, Orlando Police expressed interest in building a new headquarters -- leaving the current building and land empty.
The location of the current headquarters is across from the Amway Center -- where the Magic hope to expand.
The proposed entertainment complex would likely include a new hotel as well as dining and nightlife options for both residents and tourists.
