DeLand man charged with luring a minor to commit sex acts
21-year-old man communicated with 14-year-old boy, police say
DeLand police arrested a 21-year-old man on Thursday after an investigation revealed he was attempting to lure a 14-year-old boy to engage in sex acts.
Maxwell Arturo Gonzalez, of Orange City, has been charged with traveling to seduce/solicit/lure or entice a child and use a computer to seduce/solicit/lure or entice a child.
The victim's mother first alerted detectives when her older son saw an older man leaving their house on Tuesday. The mother then found out her 14-year-old son was communicating with Gonzalez about sex.
Police said Gonzalez was arrested after he went to the victim's home to engage in sex acts, where police were waiting to arrest him.
"Any circumstances when an adult interacts with a child inappropriately we take seriously," said DeLand police Sgt. Chris Estes. "It's an outrage to the community and we're working real hard on it."
Doreen Berkie of Orange City lives a few doors down from Gonzalez and said she's never felt comfortable around him.
"In one way it doesn't surprise me, and in another way it just makes me sick," she said.
Police believe there could be additional victims and urge anyone with information to contact police at 386-736-5999.
Gonzalez was booked into the Volusia County jail on $10,000 bond. According to FDLE records, Gonzalez was previously arrested in 2005 for trying to make an explosive device.
