A school crossing guard is off the job and behind bars after deputies arrested him for child pornography charges.
Deputies arrested 36-year-old Dominick Barbieri on Thursday after raiding his Apopka home and searching his personal computer.
An Orange County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said they searched his computer and discovered he downloaded child pornography from several websites.
For six and a half years, deputies said he worked right alongside children, protecting them as a crossing guard. His family said this year, he helped kids cross the street at Clay Springs Elementary.
Parents said it's just another thing to worry about when they send their kids off to school.
"It's a scary thought because not only my children, but for all the other children that are around here," said Regina Capo, who lives around the corner from Barbieri. "It's pretty sad because now you've just got to teach your kids that no one is worth your trust. It's scary."
Even Barbieri's family can't believe he could be involved with child porn.
"He knows better," said a relative who did not want to be identified. She said she had no idea what he was doing behind his locked bedroom until deputies raided that room Tuesday.
"If he's going to be doing this, then he doesn't need to be a crossing guard or anywhere near any kids," said Lisa Besch, who lives nearby.
The Orange County School District had not yet heard about his arrest late Thursday.
Deputies said Barbieri he did not take any pictures of children himself, that he only downloaded the pictures, and that his ex-girlfriend tipped them off.
Crossing guards work for the sheriff's office and they do get background checks. OCSO fired him Wednesday before his arrest.
