Deputies: Volusia man decapitated opossum for not fighting with dog
Man apparently angered when animal fight didn't spark, deputies say
A New Smyrna Beach man was arrested on Thursday morning after deputies say he sicked a dog on an opossum for the animals to fight, then proceeded to decapitate the opossum with an axe when the dog didn't fight the animal.
Alan McCarty, 31, has been charged with animal cruelty after deputies found the opossum with a bloody axe at his house on Hickory Street, according to Volusia County sheriff's deputies.
A witness told deputies McCarty stuck the opossum in the dog kennel with their pet dog hoping to spark an animal fight, according to the news release. When the animals didn't fight, McCarty became enraged and killed the opossum, deputies said.
When questioned, McCarty told deputies it was his girlfriend who intentionally let her dog out and it attacked the opossum. He said that he killed the opossum to end its suffering, according to deputies.
McCarty was booked into Volusia County Jail on $1,000 bond.
