Deputies: Woman beat ex-husband, dragged him behind truck
Suspect's brother also faces charges in Samsula attack
A 54-year-old Volusia County man wearing only his underwear was beaten, shocked with a stun gun, tied up and dragged behind a pickup truck for a half-mile by his ex-wife, her brother and a friend after he entertained a woman at the house he shares with his former spouse, according to sheriff's officials.
Truck driver Jeanette Morris, 61, and her brother Harold Anderson, 63 were arrested Tuesday morning. Morris faces charges of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, attempted murder, false imprisonment, aggravated battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Anderson faces charges of attempted murder, false imprisonment, aggravated battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Joan Hobart, a friend of Morris, was arrested Wednesday on charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault. Deputies said Hobart, 46, of New Smyrna Beach, drove the truck that was used in the dragging.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, Morris became upset after she learned her ex-husband had a woman at the house, located on High Ridge Lane. Deputies said Morris told them she had an agreement with her ex that he would take care of the animals while she was out of town and that he may stay at the residence until she pays $1,300 for a debt she owes him.
Deputies said Morris had not been at the house for some time and had not agreed to having others at the home.
Morris and her brother were drinking with her ex-husband Tuesday night when the duo attacked him at gunpoint, deputies said. Deputies said the duo tied red twine around the man's neck and wrists and dragged him with a Ford F-150 truck. They also threatened to scalp him, according to deputies.
The man managed to get loose while being dragged behind the truck and ran to a nearby home for help, deputies said.
"I was just sitting in my living room and I had a gentleman walk up to my front porch. He's in his underwear, he's all bloody and he's got a rope around his neck," the caller told 911 dispatchers. "He's claiming that his wife's son tried to beat him up, drive him down the road behind the pickup."
The man was taken to Halifax Hospital were he was treated for his injuries, including a fractured pelvis, fractured facial bones and bleeding on the brain. He remains in critical condition.
