MELBOURNE, Fla. -

Brevard County Fire Rescue is investigating a natural gas leak that caused what residents thought was an explosion Wednesday morning in West Melbourne.

The natural gas transmission line failed off of Simon Road, just south of US 192 near Interstate 95. Deputies said the cap or valve that failed caused the noise that residents heard.

Dispatchers received multiple 911 calls just before 5:30 a.m. reporting an "explosion" followed by a "loud roaring noise." According to deputies, the leak was located in the middle of pasture land located southwest of Simon Road.

Gas was escaping and some residents voluntarily evacuated, but evacuations weren't required, according to deputies. Deputies said natural gas is a flammable, colorless, odorless, lighter-than-air, non-toxic substance.

The hazardous materials crew responded and stopped the leak at around 7:30 a.m. Deputies said no residents were in danger.
