PALM COAST, Fla. -

Flagler County sheriff's deputies were investigating a scene on Brownstone Lane in Palm Coast in which a deputy was forced to shoot a 32-year-old man accused of being violent toward his family earlier in the day.

Deputies said they were responding to a possible Baker Act incident, indicating mental issues were involved, around 4:25 p.m. Saturday.

When deputies arrived, the man was armed with a machete and carried a Bible under his arm, officials said.

Deputies said family members were reporting the man was suicidal.

Family members said the man had become paranoid recently and may have been using synthetic marijuana, deputies said.

Another deputy was transported to Florida Hospital Flagler after suffering minor injuries during the incident, officials said.
