BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -

A deputy shot and killed an alligator Friday afternoon in north Brevard County.

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office said the gator was contained between several patrol vehicles but was able to get loose.

One of the deputies had to shoot the gator, estimated at 8 to 10 feet, because it became aggressive toward him.  The deputy shot the animal with an assault rifle.

Deputies said they had a trapper on the way, but had no option but to shoot it once the animal became aggressive.

As temperatures start to warm up, gators become more active, leaving their lairs and looking for a mate, said deputies.

The FWC advises, if anyone has concerns with an alligator or crocodile that poses a threat to humans, pets or property, call the FWC's Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (392-4286).
