Diamond heist leads to multi-agency pursuit
Suspect took $25,000 solitaire ring
A man swiped a diamond solitaire ring valued at $25,000 Wednesday morning in Vero Beach, leading to a police pursuit through two counties.
Indian River County sheriff's investigators said the suspect entered the Ultra Diamond outlet store at the Vero Beach Fashion Outlet Mall, 1824 94th Drive in Vero Beach around 11:13 AM.
The suspect, described as a black male with a beard, asked to see a solitaire diamond ring and then grabbed it from the sales associate and fled the store on foot.
The sheriff's office said he fled north on I-95 and a traffic stop by Indian River County Deputies was attempted near the north county line.
The suspect stopped near the 157 mile marker but sped away when deputies exited their vehicles and began to approach his. Indian River County units did not pursue the suspect further into Brevard County.
Brevard County law enforcement officials were contacted and air support from both counties was utilized in an attempt to locate the suspect vehicle. It is believed that the suspect exited the interstate at one of the Palm Bay exits and may have blended into traffic. According to the Indian River County Sheriff's Office, by the time law enforcement helicopters reached the area, ground units from Brevard County had lost sight of the suspect’s car.
The suspect was wearing a navy blue t-shirt, blue jeans and a skull cap and driving a black cadillac STX with Florida tag 361LYE.
The vehicle was determined to have been rented in North Carolina and detectives are working with the rental car company in order to identify the lessee. There were no reported injuries during the incident. Video or photos from the store are in the process of being recovered from the jewelry store’s surveillance camera system.
Anyone with information about the identity of the suspect or other information about the case is asked to contact Detective Joe Abollo at 772-978-6189.
