Disney's Fantasy to set sail to Central Florida
Newest cruise ship handed over to Disney
Disney's newest cruise ship, The Disney Fantasy, is one big step closer to sailing to its home at Port Canaveral.
Today, in a traditional maritime ceremony, Disney formally took ownership of the 4,000 passenger ship.
The flag of German shipbuilder Meyer Werft was lowered as the Disney Cruise Line flag was raised -- marking the final step of construction.
"Today we celebrate the culmination of a wonderful partnership, as we take possession of the Disney Fantasy and prepare for the journey home to Florida. This ship is the result of the superb craftsmanship from the master shipbuilders at Meyer Werft and the innovation, imagination and ingenuity of the Disney team, who have partnered together so beautifully to bring this ship to life," said Karl Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line. "We are eagerly anticipating our guests, who will experience storytelling in enchanting new ways onboard the Disney Fantasy while making magical memories that will last a lifetime."
The Fantasy has been undergoing sea trials in the North Sea for the last few weeks after nearly two years of construction at the shipyards in Papenberg, Germany.
Soon the Fantasy will make its way across the Atlantic. Her first stop will be New York for its christening on March 1st. Then it will come to Port Canaveral in time for its inaugural voyage on March 31.
While the exterior of the ship is finished, interior finishing work will take place all the way up to its debut voyage.
The Fantasy & Dream will sail to the Caribbean & the Bahamas from Port Canaveral.
Once the Fantasy is here, the Magic will head to New York & Galveston, TX.
The Disney Wonder has been sailing out of Los Angeles, but will end up in Miami by the end of the year.
