Dolphin stampede spotted off San Diego coast
Thousands of dolphins swim in giant 'super pod'
You've probably never seen a "super mega dolphin pod" of dolphins swimming in the ocean, but that is exactly what a group of tourists off the coast of San Diego saw last week.
The Los Angeles Times reports Captain Joe Dutra of Hornblower Cruises told local news stations that the pod was more than seven miles long and five miles wide.
Dutra said he thought there were probably about 100,000 dolphins in the pod. He said it was the biggest he had ever seen, which is why he dubbed it the "super mega dolphin pod". Another captain said the dolphins reached speeds of up to 25 miles per hour.
Although stampedes that large are uncommon, it is not the first time one has been spotted off the coast of California. In January, a smaller stampede of rougly 1,000 dolphins was caught on camera near Dana Point.
