DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -

Police have arrested the driver who they say hit and killed a bicyclist in Daytona Beach Wednesday.

Robert Thomas Johnson, 24, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

Investigators said Susan E. Thompson, 22,  was riding her bicycle westbound in the outside lane of International Speedway Boulevard near Oleander Avenue at around 2:15 a.m. when she was struck from behind by a Nissan SUV.

The vehicle, later determined to be driven by Johnson, did not stop and the collision ejected Thompson from the white bicycle, police said.

International Speedway Boulevard was closed for about five hours between South Grandview Avenue and South Peninsula Drive while police investigated the crash.

Paint chips and a side mirror from the vehicle were recovered by investigators, police said.
