One-time reality television producer Bruce Beresford-Redman has been extradited to Mexico to stand trial on murder charges in the 2010 death of his wife, a family spokesman said Wednesday.

Prosecutors in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo have accused Beresford-Redman of asphyxiating his wife, Monica Burgos Beresford-Redman, in their room at a Cancun resort. Family spokesman Stephen Jaffe told CNN that Beresford-Redman was extradited early Wednesday morning, but he did not know when the former "Survivor" producer would appear before a judge.

Lawyers for Beresford-Redman said last year that the couple were in Cancun to work out marital problems caused by the producer's affair with another woman. In fighting extradition, they accused Mexican authorities of rushing to judgment because they wanted to protect Cancun's valuable tourist industry.

"He has always stated that he is innocent of the charges against him," Beresford-Redman's attorney, Richard Hirsch, said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. "It is his hope that the court in Cancun will assure that he receives a fair trial in which, he is confident, he will be exonerated."

And Jaffe said the producer's parents "are looking forward to Bruce's chance to finally have his day in court."

"They say many reports have been false and misleading and Bruce eagerly wants to set the record strait, confront the charges in a fair trial and return to his children," Jaffe said. "That's why their son waived his right to appeal the ruling here because he knows the truth will end in his acquittal."
