ORLANDO, Fla. -

A construction worker is in stable condition after he was hit by a vehicle in Orange County on State Road 417 Wednesday evening, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the worker was hit while working near the on-ramp to State Road 408 just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The worker, 52-year-old Robert Thacker, of Lake Mary, was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The road was partially blocked as traffic was backed up in the area.

The are has been a construction zone for months and marked with barrels. One lane was blocked. But for some reason the driver swerved into the closed lane and hit the worker.

Troopers are searching for the driver. Witnesses told officials it was possibly a white pick-up truck they saw leaving the scene after the accident.

FHP is investigating the accident as a hit-and-run.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS.
