ORLANDO, Fla. -

A family that discovered a five-day-old dolphin while boating six months ago has been reunited with the dolphin Tuesday at SeaWorld Orlando.

The family was able to visit the young calf in a back area pool where it is currently being cared for by animal experts. The group found the newborn dolphin in Volusia County waters and stayed with it until help arrived.

According to a release from SeaWorld Orlando, SeaWorld’s animal care experts believed the dolphin to be no more than five days old when it was found. Experts also believe that the young dolphin was likely separated from its mother before becoming stranded.

Weighing slightly less than 35 pounds at the time of rescue, the male calf has been undergoing rehabilitation by SeaWorld animal care experts for six months and now weighs more than 90 pounds.

During its rehabilitation at SeaWorld Orlando, the dolphin has been treated for lungworms, pneumonia and other health-related issues but no longer needs to be on medication. The dolphin's weight has also tripled while being in SeaWorld’s care, another positive indicator that its health is progressing.

This was the first bottlenose dolphin to be rescued this year, according to the release from SeaWorld.
