DeLAND, Fla. -

A fire broke out at a junkyard in Volusia County, sending a plume of smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

The fire broke out around 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Central Florida Recycling Center at 906 Garfield Avenue near Dan's Auto Salvage.

No injuries were reported in the blaze.

Firefighters say it appears a large machine used to crush scrap metal caught fire around 2 this afternoon. Flames quickly spread to piles of metal nearby and it took about a dozen firefighters around 2 hours to finally put out the flames.

"And one of the issues that we had here is just getting water supply there it takes a lot of hose to lay into the back where the fire's at," said Ron Snowberger, Deland Deputy Fire Chief.

Firefighters say the flames were big, but they were contained.

No other details were immediately known.
