MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. -

A Merritt Island brush fire that quickly grew to 15 acres and burned near homes was contained by firefighters.

The fire began just before 1 p.m. Wednesday and was first reported at about a half-acre in size. The fire occurred off Wildwood Avenue, which runs north from Chase Hammock Road south of Kennedy Space Center.

The blaze quickly grew as firefighters cleared a protective line by using tractors to remove vegetation and other fuel.

Florida Forest Service, Brevard County Fire-Rescue and Cape Canaveral fire crews were in the area to defend nearby homes if the flames jumped the fire line. Merritt Island volunteer firefighters also battled the blaze.

No evacuations were ordered, but some residents left voluntarily, officials said.

The area is east of North Courtenay Parkway and south of Kennedy Space Center.
