Foul odor wafts across Clermont
Residents call city officials about rotten egg smell
A nasty smell has spread across Clermont, prompting residents to call city officials about the odor.
According to James Kinzler, director of environmental services, the odor is coming from fertilizer being spread in a field off Highway 27 on Schofield Road, just south of Clermont.
Windy Hill Middle School officials said students at the school smelled the odor, described as rotten eggs or manure, but no one became ill.
"I had to cover my nose, everything was so bad," one student said.
"You know when you go to a circus, and the horse is around the corner and you know it," another student said. "That is what it smelled like all day."
The hay field owner said he will stop spreading the fertilizer to alleviate the problem.
The fertilizer, which had been brought in from Zellwood, was scheduled to be spread for 10 days.
