A registered sex offender who was wanted for violating his probation turned himself in to officials at the Brevard County Jail Tuesday after deputies believe he tried to flee the area, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
Johnny Ray Morgan, 51, was convicted in 1995 of sexual battery on a child under 12 in Brevard County, according to Yvonne Martinez, Palm Bay police spokeswoman.
He is being held without bond until he makes an appearance before a judge Wednesday.
Morgan is on probation, and his last registered address was a homeless camp in a wooded area behind Walgreens at the intersection of Minton Road and Malabar Road Southeast.
The registered sex offender removed his GPS ankle bracelet Sunday morning and fled to a homeless camp in the woods.
When Morgan removed the GPS tracker, an alarm alerted probation officers, who contacted Palm Bay police. Officers searched the area and located his campsite and the tracking device.
It appeared all of Morgan’s personal belongings were gone, Martinez said — indicating he has fled the area.
In 1995, Morgan was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was later released, and he is on sex offender probation through 2017, Florida Department of Corrections records show.
